Vesicular Stomatitis (VSV)-

What is Vesicular Stomatitis? it is a contagious disease that afflicts horses, livestock, wildlife and even humans. The disease is caused by a virus, which although rarely life threatening, can have significant financial impact on the horse industry.

What is FHANA doing to ensure my horse is safe during the upcoming inspections?  FHANA has taken the advice from a local vet in the areas affected to require a Health Certificate for those inspection participants.  The Health Certificate will need to be dated within 5 (Colorado), 7 (Texas) days of the inspection and will need to contain a statement by the vet “the horse has been examined for VSV lesions and were not noted at the mouth, genitalia, & feet”. 

We would encourage members to not share buckets, not allow horses to touch noses, and not allow spectators to go from horse to horse petting them, control flies, and keep stalls clean.

We would also encourage members to check with their local inspection location to see if any additional requirements are needed.
