Update on the KFPS’s DNA tests
You may have seen the recent articles from the KFPS regarding the development of DNA marking tests for dwarfism and hydrocephaly. The FHANA Health Committee has been following these developments carefully. The ‘marking test’ that has been identified at this point may have a margin of error due to its nature, as stated by the KFPS. In order to eliminate multiple testing on the same horse and the risk of false readings, the KFPS has decided to wait for the development of the more accurate ‘gene test’ before making DNA test policy. The gene test may be finalized this summer. The FHANA Health Committee stresses that the tests are not for every breeder for 2014. When they become available they are tools for determining risky combinations in breeding. We will be making recommendations to the FHANA Board when the tests are available.
