Insect Bite Hypersensitivity, or IBH, is the most common allergic skin disease in horses worldwide, and Friesians are no exception.  In fact, previous research studies and data collected by the KFPS indicate the occurrence of IBH in Friesian horses is as high as 18.2%.  The cause of IBH is multifactorial and involves both environmental and genetic factors.  IBH is known to occur widely throughout the world by various names such as sweet itch, summer dermatitis, summer recurrent dermatitis, summer eczema or equine Culicoides sensitivity.

Susan L. White DVM, MS, DACVIM is the Josiah Meigs Distinguished Professor, Emeritus in large animal medicine at the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. White is board certified in Large Animal Internal Medicine and has a Masters degree in veterinary pathology. Dr. White is a recipient of the ACVIM Kirk Award for professional excellence and is a past president and chair of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine.  Dr. White has received the Distinguished Life Membership Award from the American Association of Equine Practitioners.  Dr. White has had a long-standing interest in equine dermatology and frequently presents topics in large animal dermatology at both nationally and international veterinary meetings.  She maintains a consulting service in equine dermatology nationally.
